Facebook offers voice calling in US

Facebook is offering voice calling via the Messenger app in the United States.

Released with the new Graph Search feature but with much less fanfare (read: none – Facebook made no announcements, merely saying it was an extension of the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in Messenger test it trialled in Canada earlier in the month in response to media queries, according to MacNewsWorld).

The feature is only available currently in the US for iPhones with the Messenger app (ie users cannot call a landline or logged in friend on a computer), although Facebook is developing an Android and BlackBerry offering, BBC News reported.

The option was independent of Skype, which was integrated into Facebook already, BBC News reported, with the app limited to voice calling.

Although What Mobile has yet to hear from Facebook as to whether it is lining the service up for the United Kingdom, the company expected to roll the feature out to other operating systems, and countries, BBC News reported.
