With elections due to take place this year in the world’s largest democracy, Facebook has launched an Indian election tracker that allows users to follow trends, mentions and even interact with candidates.
The first seats open to voting will be at the end of April and final counts will be on May 16, making it a mammoth election period. And Facebook wants to be at the heart of the debate, hoping to get a boost over its social media rivals such as Twitter in the process.
Whether or not India’s 814 million registered voters will take to the service to discuss topical issues, such as who will be the next Prime Minister, remains to be seen.
Other features on the election tracker include an Indian Political Leaders List and an Indian Political Parties List, which people can follow within Facebook.
According to the company’s own data, Facebook has over 80 million users in the country.
