EE to launch 5G “imminently”

16 UK cities will connect to 5G in the first phase of rollout

EE is on the verge of launching 5G in 16 cities this year according to parent company BT.

The announcement was made in BT’s full year financial results released today (May 9).

An exact date was not provided but it hints EE is posturing to be first to rollout the new mobile standard.

The operator has been arming itself for its 5G launch by striking partnerships with hardware vendors to range the: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, LG V50 ThinQ, Huawei Mate X, Oppo Reno 5G and the HTC 5G Mobile Smart Hub.

Earlier in the year the mobile operator announced it will roll out 5G to the following cities: London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham,  Bristol, Coventry, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.

New BT chief executive Philip said BT/EE is aiming to be the “leader in ultrafast and mobile 5G networks”. The former WorldPay boss is only three months into the job replacing Gavin Patterson in February.

He also announced BT will aim to connect 15m properties to superfast 38Mbps broadbandin two year’s time.
