EE To Install First Permanent Mast at Glastonbury 2017

EE is installing a permanent mast on site after claiming that Glastonbury Festival 2017 will be the “most shared live event of 2017”.

The network will install the first permanent network mast on site this year, in an effort to boost signal strength and reliability at the major festival. EE has predicted that over 40 terabytes (TB) of data will be shared across the five day event. For reference, 1 terabyte is the equivalent of 1000 gigabytes (GB) or 10 million selfies. 40 TB is the equivalent of 40,000 GB or 400 million selfies, EE claims. Last year EE set up what it claimed to be the world’s most powerful temporary 4G network.

The latest move comes as part of EE’s plans to spread its 4G footprint over 95 per cent of the UK by the end of 2020, which will include special “air mast” blimps being deployed at major events and rural areas to boost coverage. Attendees can take advantage of the Juice Tube Power Bank swapping service, where they can take away a portable power bank to charge on the go. EE has sponsored Glastonbury for the last five years and will again be providing free device charging to all 135,000 festival-goers. Compatible devices can be fully juiced in 30 minutes so long as they support quick-charging. There will also be wireless charging for those that need it.
