Good news for EE customers. A new study has revealed that the network topped Vodafone, 02 and Three for mobile internet performance at Heathrow and Gatwick airport.

The speed test study, conducted by mobile analytics firm RootMetrics, tested the download and upload speeds of all four major networks at both airports.

At Heathrow Airport, EE had a very fast download speed of 31.2 Megabytes per second (Mbps), whilst Three’s measured at 4.64 Mbps. Both 02 and Vodafone’s download speeds measured under 4 Mbps.

EE had the highest upload speed of 18.06 Mbps, whilst 02, Three and Vodafone had speeds of under 5 Mbps.

The results were very similar at Gatwick Airport. EE took the download speed crown yet again with a recorded speed of 20.4 Mbps. Vodafone came second with a speed of 5.68 Mbps, whilst Three and 02’s speeds came in at 3.2 and 2.4 Mbps respectively.

EE had the best upload speed at 17.85 Mbps, whilst the upload speeds of its three rivals didn’t even hit the 2 Mbps mark.

The results of the speed test show that EE customers could potentially buffer a HD film in five seconds, stream music instantly or download a game in less than five seconds.

Bill Moore, CEO RootMetrics, said: “Travellers in the UK can now get a better idea of the mobile internet performance while travelling or during delays at the UK’s two busiest airports. Our testing at Heathrow and Gatwick showed impressive performances from multiple operators, especially EE, which had the fastest speeds and won the RootScore Award at both airports.

“Internet access in airports has become a business essential and a consumer assumption. Travellers expect to be able to get online easily, whether it’s for work or entertainment purposes, and travellers now have accurate, unbiased information to help them to get the most out of their mobile internet performance at Heathrow and Gatwick.”
