The launch of Disney+ in seven European territories Wednesday generated 5 million downloads.

The streaming service made its debut at a time when many Europeans are on lockdown at home as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak.

According to App Annie, Germany topped the list of streamers, followed by the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy. The data analyst believes Disney is on course to be one of the most popular services in the region. As part of its launch offer, Disney has released Frozen 2 on the service two months ahead of schedule.

Disney+ is the 7th ranked non-gaming app by consumer spend worldwide, which App Annie is impressive given that the performance was based predominantly on the US alone. It’s anticipated the European launch will see the service move further up the ranks.

In December 2019, Disney+ users spent an average of 3 hours and 10 minutes per month in the app. This is comparable to established players like Netflix (4 hours and 20 minutes per month), and Hulu (3 hours and 20 minutes per month).

If Disney’s European uptake reflects that of the United States it would be one of the largest streaming services in each country where it launches.
