Did you enjoy taking part in the open beta of Destiny last month? If so we hope that you accrued plenty of precious memories because, come the launch of the full game, that’s all that you’ll have left.
See, it turns out that those characters you spent so long lovingly crafting, leveling and equipping with the best gear won’t be carried over to Destiny’s full version. They were stored on a cloud-based server at Bungie, and have now been deleted.
It’s bad news, sure, especially as we had held out hope that the avatars created might be transferable, but Bungie has offered an explanation… of sorts. It believes that the transition from beta phase to full launch will simply too great for Guardians to be retained. In a statement, the Destiny developer said, “This is the last time we’ll ask you to part with your hero. On Sept. 9, you can create a Guardian who will keep you company for a good, long time. On a long-enough timeline, you might decide to delete him or her and start over again – but that will be your call to make.”
So the upside to all this, we suppose, is that there should be a wealth of changes, small and large, coming to Destiny before its full release. And if leveling up eight more times again with your Guardian is that much of a chore then, well, Destiny probably isn’t the game for you.
