O2 insights revealed data consumption across UK cities

O2 has today unveiled insights that show data consumption across several UK cities jumped by up to 50 per cent in September 2020 in comparison with the same time last year.

Bradford has experienced a rise in data consumption of 50 per cent as it entered its third month of local restrictions. Coventry (47 per cent), Hull, Norwich, and Nottingham (all 42 per cent) were also among the top of the data consumption list.

Cities with some of the most significant rises in data consumption were:

  1. Bradford: +50 per cent
  2. Coventry: +47 per cent
  3. Hull: +42 per cent
  4. Norwich: +42 per cent
  5. Nottingham: +42 per cent
  6. Derby: +41 per cent
  7. Leicester: +40 per cent
  8. Sheffield: +36 per cent
  9. Aberdeen: +35 per cent
  10. Bournemouth: +34 per cent

Since the start of lockdown, O2 has upgraded 4G capacity in over 8,800 postcodes. This has led to less network congestion, faster download speeds and web browsing, an improved social media experience, and less video stalling.

As people relied increasingly on technology to keep them connected, O2 said it found significant spikes in data since lockdown has coincided with major events. These events include the end of the Premier League season, the Champions League final and the Government’s lockdown announcement at the end of April.

O2 chief technology officer Brendan O’Reilly said: “Mobile connectivity has become a true lifeline for many and will continue to play a vital role in keeping Britain connected.

“We remain committed to doing everything we can to help our customers stay in contact with their colleagues, friends and loved ones during this challenging period.”
