The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) will use the Electronica trade fair in Germany this week to announce the final stages in development of an exciting addition to the Bluetooth specification.

With the standard being released in 2009, where devices will be able to run for years on coin cell sized batteries, the Low Energy technology will allow the development of a range of new products in sports and fitness and healthcare, as well as improvements for existing technologies (such as Bluetooth watches, which currently need charging every one or two weeks).

The first products using this new low energy consumption version of Bluetooth are expected at the end of 2009.
