Apple has been hailed as the world’s biggest PC maker, according to Q4 results for PC sales published by market research firm Canalys.
Canalys’ decision to include tablets as PCs helped Apple to stay on top – due to strong holiday sales of the iPad – edging out competitors such as Windows and Samsung.
Apple took 19.5% of all PC sales, or just under 31 million units, with its tablets accounting for over three quarters of its total shipments, 84% to be exact. The company’s success has been attributed to the release of the iPad Air and iPad Mini with retina display.
If tablet sales were to be excluded from the results, however, then the outcome for PCs would not seem as bright, with Canalys stating that shipments would have declined by 7% in all regions.
Another success story has been Lenovo, which was an early adopter of the Android operating system. The company now ranks as number two in PC shipments, with almost 12% of the market in Q4.
Meanwhile, the top five vendors was rounded out by Samsung, Hewlett-Packard and Dell respectively.
