Apple now replacing shattered iPhone displays in-store (UPDATE: Now available in the UK)

There’s nothing we can say here about broken phone displays which hasn’t been said before. We’ve all seen it, we’ve all experienced it, we all know that it sucks. It really, truly is the worst.

It’s also the perfect storm of cost and inconvenience – not only do you have to send your device away to your insurance provider or a third-party repair service for an undisclosed amount of time, but you can be sure that they’ll also charge you an arm and a leg for it as well. When you compare it with Apple’s usually exemplary customer service, it doesn’t really add up.

It’s about time then that Apple did something about it. From August 4th onwards you will be able to take your iPhone into your nearest official Apple Store and get the screen repaired right there – while you wait if you so please, as it’s set to take no more than an hour or two.

Not only is that infinitely more convenient than anything offered previously, but it’s also looking set to be much cheaper, too. The cost of a replacement screen is set to be $149 in the USA, which translates to roughly £89.

The only devices accepted in the scheme (that we know of) are the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, which should cover the majority of actively used iPhones at this point. We don’t know any details about the service will be hitting the rest of the world, but it’s so good that we believe it’s a matter of when and not if.

UPDATE: The service is now officially available in the UK! The repair service will cost you around £119, although the cost will depend on the extend of the damage.
