In a world where so many large institutions are afraid of embracing technology, the air travel sector has always been rather ahead of its time. Thinking back to a time when online pre-flight check-in wasn’t a thing is enough to send a shiver down the spine, and we now even have air hosts and hostesses with iPads. So it’s refreshing to see that the industry is continuing to push forward technologically – in this case with Air Berlin.
The German airline is now allowing passengers to check-in with their Pebble smartwatch. Making use of the device’s black-and-white only display it can present your boarding pass in a QR code style, allowing you to simply hold your wrist over a scanner as opposed to fumbling around for a sheet of paper.
This is only made possible through Air Berlin’s iOS app, so unfortunately Android Pebble users are still stuck in the aviating Stone Age for the time being. If you’re on iOS but don’t have a Pebble, you can still use your device’s screen to display your boarding pass.
