Adidas’ miCoach app does big business for the company, and it’s about to take it to the next level with its very own smartwatch.

The fitness giant has announced the Adidas miCoach Smart Run smart watch. More than a bit of a mouthful, isn’t it? The new device obviously isn’t positioned to compete with feature-complete smart watches like the Samsung Galaxy Gear or the Sony Smart Watch 2. Instead it’s a fitness-focused device that runs Android 4.1.1 with a built-in MP3 player and Bluetooth connectivity. The latter brings the ability to connect to headphones so you can either listen to the former’s music or get coaching from a range of sports personalities.

It’s display measures in at 1.45 inches, with a 184 x 184 touchscreen and 4GB of internal storage. If used in casual mode then the battery will last for around two weeks, while the modes that collect running data will take its usage to just under a day.

GPS technology will let you track speed and distance as well as log routes. There’s also a heart rater monitor. You’ll be able to sync your Adidas account by either accessing your phone’s data or through a computer.

It’s priced at $399, and we’re not sure how it will measure up as a more general-use phone. We haven’t heard of a UK release, either. Still, it’s interesting to see the company getting into this market, and it could mean big things for smart watches if it’s successful.
