Activision’s Marvel titles being removed from digital services

Activision has produced many a game based on the Marvel comics universe over the past decade or so. But now it looks like that partnership is to come to an end.

Activision’s recent Marvel titles, including the likes of Deadpool, X-Men: Destiny and a slew of Spider-Man games, are being removed from digital outlets like PSN, XBLA and Steam. This seems to be the sign of the end of a licensing agreement between the two.

And in fact, it kind of makes sense. Activision’s Marvel titles recently went on sale across PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in various promotions, and it could well be that the recent release of The Amazing Spider-Man on Vita (reviewed here) was a quick attempt at a bit more cash.

Add to that that Capcom recently removed its own Marvel vs Capcom games from digital stores, and something of a picture starts to form. Could Marvel be looking to sign up to a new publisher or perhaps even start developing games on its own terms much like with its recent movie initative?

If it meant better Marvel titles, we’d certainly welcome the move.
