Xiaomi is making compact cameras now

Xiaomi has announced the new Xiaoyi M1 compact camera, operating under their sub-brand Xiaoyi and featuring interchangeable lenses.

Not content with releasing drones and slow cookers, Xiaomi seems to be branching out well beyond their smartphone footprint. The Chinese manufacturer has announced a new compact camera which uses the Sony IMX269 Micro 4/3 sensor. This puts it in the same category as other top DSLR manufacturers such as Panasonic, who regularly use the Micro 4/3 technology in their own range of shooters.

The M1 will shoot at a resolution of 20.16 megapixels and feature interchangeable lenses. Images can also be interpolated up to a massive 50 megapixels, using some software trickery. It also supports 4K video recording up to 30FPS and 1080p video recording up to 60FPS.

Xiaomi Xiaoyi M1 is very cheap

One thing the camera seems to lack is optical image stabilisation (OIS), with the on-board quad-core image processor offering the digital variant instead. This is not as good as the former, though we’re sure you’ll be able to attach lenses which support OIS in the future.

The Xaiomi Xiaoyi M1 will debut in China on September 23rd and it’s unlikely we’ll ever see it in the UK. Two models are available; a standard zoom kit with 12-40mm lens priced at 2199 yuan (£252.73) and a second version with a 42.5mm fixed prime costing 2999 yuan (£344.67). Considering what you get in the box, that’s incredibly good value.
