After a little bit of waiting, the Oculus Rift is finally available to buy in the UK from today.
Previously available only in the United States, the virtual reality (VR) headset that ignited a revolution is finally here in the UK. You’ll be able to purchase it for £549 through retailers including Curry’s, PC World, Harrods, John Lewis, Best Buy and Game. The latter three will also have in-store demo experiences that people can try over the coming weeks. Head to the Oculus Live webpage and find out local availability for your nearest participating store.
Every Rift headset will ship with platformer Lucky’s Tale, along with hundreds of free 3D 360 videos, VR movies and VR games available on the Oculus Store.
Oculus Rift has been through several versions
Aside from the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift is probably the most technologically advanced virtual reality headset currently on the market. With some of the gaming industry’s top figures helping design the headset, including id Software founder and Doom creator John Carmack, it’s gone through numerous iterations before landing in public hands.
Early developer kits operated at a much lower refresh rate and resolution, though the consumer version now carries a 2160 x 1200 panel with 90Hz (images per second) refresh rate for a more lifelike and smoother experience. Just make sure you have a powerful enough PC to run it… as the minimum recommended specs suggest at least an Nvidia GTX970 graphics card. Ouch.
