Mobile gaming is an industry that only keeps getting bigger. Games act as a perfect companion for those stressful morning commutes or short journeys. However, with the wealth of titles on offer it can be a little daunting to separate the good from the bad.

We’ve got another Top Five for you! Just as we did last week, here’s our rundown of the top five best free mobile games for July 6th – July 12th:

Alphabear (Android and iOS)

Alphabear is a bizarre puzzle game where the aim is to collect teddybears while also spelling out words. Each bear usually starts life as a single tile, surrounded by a bunch of lettered tiles. Creating words with the available board tiles will free up room, which allows the bears to grow and expand. The larger the bear, the more bonus points you’ll get at the end. Alphabear changes the types of bears each day, so you’ll always be seeing new ones and trying to collect. A great early morning commuter title to help jump-start your brain.

DC Comics Legends (iOS only)

DC Comics Legends blends classic card-collecting elements with turn-based battles against some of the universes most evil villains. Play as your favourite superhero’s and fight in a multitude of arenas from the comics, including  Metropolis. Earn credits to upgrade your team and create the ultimate crime fighting force. Although it’s still in BETA, the game feels surprisingly polished and runs very well. As an RPG, you’ll also be treated to a story which centres around the usual themes of mass destruction and saving the world.

Down The Mountain (iOS only)

Down the Mountain is a fairly explanatory game. The aim is to reach the bottom of a Minecraft-inspired mountain (duh!) by jumping left and right across various types of themed blocks. Many of them are safe to traverse, though some will hide nasty traps which need to be avoided at all costs. Early levels are pretty easy but the difficulty soon begins to ramp up as you progress. Ushering in memories of the classic Frogger series, it’s an incredibly simplistic yet challenging title which is great for bite-sized gaming sessions.

Magic Duels (iOS only)

Magic Duels is the first official mobile adaptation of the popular Magic: The Gathering card battler. You’ll get the ability to build your own decks and follow five stories from the Magic universe, each with its own set of challenges along the way. Gold is earned for each victory which can be further used to upgrade your deck. It’s pretty intense for a card battler and the screen can quickly get cluttered with spell cards and the like. If you’ve never got into Magic: The Gathering because of the money aspects, this game is the perfect way to jump in.

Nono Islands (iOS only)

Taking inspiration from the Temple Run series, Nono Islands is another endless runner with a twist. There’s no obligation to run and it’s even possible to move backwards, which is handy if you find yourself in a tough situation. Collecting gold will unlock chests which contain map pieces and relics; you can use these to further your progression within the game. Unlike Temple Run which is somewhat fast-paced, it’s better to take your time in Nono Islands and wait for the opportune moment to move forward.
