Introduction

You’ve probably heard that WhatsApp finally got two-way authentication right? Well, it turns out that this form of security has actually been common for quite some time on lesser known messaging apps. With that in mind, we’ve decided to compile a top 5 of the best secure messaging applications currently available.

Telegram

(Android, iOS and Windows Phone)

As probably the most well-known two way secured application out there, Telegram has got a name for itself as the app of choice for ISIS and other terror groups due to its unbreakable security. Developed using a distributed infrastructure, it’s incredibly fast to use and what’s more, it’s completely free to download with no advertisements.

Signal

(Android and iOS)

Endorsed by whistle-blower Edward Snowden, Signal uses full end-to-end encryption for complete privacy and even allows users to compare messages using a ‘fingerprint’, ensuring that the recipient is getting a genuine message that isn’t coming from an eavesdropper. It supports messaging, calls and media transfer, meaning you can essentially use it as a be-all communication app.

Bleep

(Android and iOS)

Developed by the guys behind popular illegal downloading client BitTorrent, Bleep is an instant messaging app that supports a variety of formats and has a unique “whisper” feature, which deletes a message as soon as the other person reads it for added security. Using the same peer-to-peer technology that is behind BitTorrent, you can rest assured that your messages are only seen by the receiver and no intermediary.

Wickr

(Android and iOS)

Using end-to-end encryption much like WhatsApp, Wickr is a secure messaging application that offers plenty of options for keeping your data safe. You’ll have the ability to shred messages for added security and the app is backed by four of the most respected organisations in the world. Wickr explicitly states that they cannot read any messages sent between users, which gives us a little peace of mind.

Wire

(Android and iOS)

Backed by Skype co-founder Janus Friis, Wire is intended to be a video chat competitor of the popular application. Recently, the company updated it to include end-to-end encryption for all “conversation content”, including video and messaging chat. The company states that they don’t hold any decryption keys and they have no access to your data, meaning those late-night calls to your spouse are completely safe.
