Four out of five (81%) say group chats help them maintain friendships

One in three (33%) turn to group chats when in need of support

Between juggling work and life admin, it can be easy to feel disconnected from friends and family from time to time. However, new research from online smartphone retailer, e2save, has revealed that being a part of group chats on your smartphone can be effective in combatting loneliness and maintaining relationships.

Even when we can’t be near our friends and families, it seems that group chats are offering a pretty good substitute. Three-quarters of people (75%) say that group chats offer social interaction even when they’re not with people physically, and four in five (79%) believe group chats have a positive impact on society.

When it comes to making life decisions, it seems there’s no better place to seek life advice than a group chat, with one in three (33%) turning to the group for support when making a big decision. Group chats are also good for improving ourselves too: over half of those surveyed (55%) feel that group chats make them feel more organised.

According to the data, a huge 93% of people are now in at least one group chat. Over a quarter of people (28%) say they use WhatsApp for group chats and 23% of people use Facebook Messenger.

With all these group chats, it’s no surprise that people can’t keep up, and two in five (38%) admitting they don’t respond to messages for a long time and then re-join at random times. Despite this, group chats have shown to be helpful with relationships, with four in five (81%) people surveyed saying that having one chat with several people helps to maintain friendships. What’s more, two in five (38%) people say they are in group chats with people they wouldn’t necessarily speak to in real life.

Commenting on the findings, Joe Linnington, mobile expert at e2save says “Social messaging apps are a great tool to help us feel connected no matter where we are. As well as keeping us up-to-date with our friends and family, it’s great to see them bringing us together with people we may not usually speak to as well.
