Hot on the heels of retailers like John Lewis and Tesco, Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy are now stocking the Amazon Kindle e-reader – complete with a special offer for customers buying a new mobile phone.

Available as a Wi-Fi only model (£111) or with the addition of 3G (£152) with no monthly fee, data usage charges or contracts, the Kindle Wi-Fi only version can also be picked up free when buying selected handsets on a 24-month contract, or for a one-off fee of £15 to get the 3G enabled model.

The Kindle allows you to download books, magazines, newspapers and blogs, as well as accessing the Internet with the integrated browser. You can also read personal documents (PDFs) and listen to MP3s. The Kindle can also read many books out loud with the text-to-speech feature.

With battery life offering up to 30 days of usage between charges (less when using the 3G model), and the e-Ink display requiring no screen illumination, the Kindle is a better choice for reading text than a similarly sized tablet that uses a backlight. For reading at night, Amazon offers a protective case with pull-out LED lamp, powered from the Kindle’s own battery.

Using Amazon’s Whispersync technology, books that have been purchased for the Kindle can also be viewed on the Kindle app for smartphones, tablets and desktop computers. Users are taken to the last viewed page so you can swap and change devices while reading the same book with ease.
