No sooner has Microsoft announced its Windows Phone 7 Tango update and it has also unveiled the much-anticipated follow-up – Windows Phone 8.
Adding a range of exciting new features to the already strong template set out by Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8 aims to bring Microsoft’s mobile OS the success it deserves but has yet to achieve.
As well as multi-core processor support, a revamped interface for even greater usability and full NFC support, Windows Phone 8 will also offer out-of-the-box Skype support for easy VoIP calls.
The only bad news is existing Windows Phone 7 users won’t see a free upgrade to Windows Phone 8 when it is released later this year, as the OS will not be capable of running on existing devices.
Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Huawei are already confirmed to release Windows Phone 8 handsets and Microsoft has committed to provide support and updates for the OS for at least 18 months.
While Windows Phone is still yet to provide a serious challenge to iOS and Android, the tide may be about to turn with the launch of Windows Phone 8. We look forward to seeing the results.
